Histology of Reproductive Organs

Examine these slide at low power first to find the field which best demonstrates the listed features. Label the indicated features, and briefly describe their functions.

1. Testis, monkey, 400x, Slide 12 (H 9700) VE’s 9th: pp. 285 & 287
Here is a labeled version of a seminiferous tubule.
And another labeled testis with tunica albugenia.
Here is a diagram of spermatogenesis.
tunica albuginea (capsule)
seminiferous tubules
basement membrane
primary spermatocytes (DNA=spermatogonia)
secondary spermatocytes (DNA = 1/2 spermatogonia)
spermatids (DNA = 1/4 spermatogonia
spermatozoa (wedge shaped, near lumen)
Sertoli cells (have plentiful cytoplasm and pale nuclei with prominent nucleoli)
interstitial tissue (between 3 seminiferous tubules)

2. Penis, c.s. monkey, 40x, Slide 13, (H 9712) VE’s 9th: p. 297
First image is a 10 view of entire penis.
Here is a labeled view of the same image.
The second image shows the dorsal epidermis and corpora cavernosa.
Here is a labeled version of the corpus cavernosum.
The third image is an enlarged view of the corpus spongiosus containing the cavernous urethra.
Here are close up views of the stratified squamous epithelium and here is a labeled view of the skin with a nerve, 400x.
cavernous urethra
transitional epithelium (lines urethra)
corpus spongiosum (surrounds urethra)
tunica albuginea (2x)
corpus cavernosum
artery or arterioles

3. Ovary, monkey, 100x, Slide 14 (H 9800) VE’s 9th: pp. 303 & 307
Here is a labeled view of an ovary with a developing follicle.
tunica albuginea
ovarian stroma (cortex)
primordial follicles
developing follicle: (Here is a labeled version of this same developing follicle.)
corona radiata
zona pellucida
primary oocyte
nucleus of oocyte

4. Ovary: Graafian follicle 100x, Slide 15 (H 3785) VE’s 9th: pp. 303 & 305
Here is a labeled Graafian follicle.
Here is close up labeled version of the Graafian follicle .
Graafian follicle
theca externa
theca interna (synthesizes androgen)
basement membrane
granulosa cells (converts androgen to estrogen, also called follicular cells)
cumulus oophorus
corona radiata
zona pellucida

5. Corpus luteum (40x), Slide 16, (H 3815) VE’s 9th: pp. 309
Here is the corpus luteum with labels
capsule (was theca externa)
glandular epithelium
ovarian stroma (cortex)

6. Fallopian tube, c.s. 100x, Slide 18, (H 9802) VE’s 9th: p. 311
Here is a 100x view of the labyrinthine folds of the fallopian tube.
Here is a labeled 400x view of the fallopian mucosa.
circular smooth muscle fibers
simple ciliated columnar epithelium
labyrinthine folds of mucosa
lamina propria
peg cells (secretory, possess apical nuclei)
ciliated cells (possess basal nuclei
